2004 Opening Ceremony

Curated by avant garde choreographer & director Dimitris Papaioannou, and held on August 13, 2004, the opening ceremony of the Greek Olympics was a widely praised spectacle, which remains well-loved by Greeks to this day.

The event began with a twenty eight (the number of the Olympiads up to then) second countdown paced by the sounds of an amplified heartbeat and culminated in an opening zeibekiko.

The Opening Ceremony was a minimalist and allegorical take on Greek culture and history hearkening back to its mythological beginnings chronicling Greek history from the ancient Minoan civilization to modern times.
